SUMMARY

The effect of various steroids on the survival time of skin homografts has been investigated in the rabbit.

Cortisol (free alcohol) is at least as active as cortisone (free alcohol) or cortisone acetate in prolonging the life of skin homografts, inhibiting the processes of wound healing and decreasing the number of circulating white blood cells.

DCA, oestradiol dipropionate, testosterone propionate and progesterone have no direct effect on the homograft reaction, nor do they interfere with the action of cortisone.

Corticosterone is also without effect on the homograft reaction. The ineffectiveness of treatment with ACTH in rabbits [Krohn, 1954] is thought to be due to the fact that corticosterone is the main component of adrenocortical secretion in the rabbit.
