Previous reports on the urinary excretion of 17-oxosteroids or of androgenic substances in patients with a testicular teratoma or seminoma have suggested either an increase over the normal, if measured chemically by the Zimmermann reaction (Warren, 1945; Twombly, 1947; Dorfman & Shipley, 1948), or a decrease in the androgenic activity, as measured by bioassay (Hamburger & Godtfredsen, 1941; Twombly, 1947). The number of patients, however, has been too small for critical evaluation.

The known importance of environmental factors such as non-descent in the aetiology of these tumours, and the frequency of homeostatic imbalance in many forms of endocrine carcinogenesis suggested that the subject should be examined in more detail. We are indebted to the Testicular Tumour Pathology panel and its associated clinical group, in particular to Dr R. C. B. Pugh and Dr E. N. K. Wallace, who made this investigation possible.
