This communication reports on a comparison of the steroids of normal placentae (see Chamberlain, Morris & Smith, 1968) and of three hydatidiform moles. All three cases of hydatidiform mole showed the fairly typical gross changes associated with this condition and histological examination confirmed the diagnosis. In cases I and II the mole was evacuated per vagina at 17 and 13 weeks respectively, in the third case the mole was removed by abdominal hysterotomy at 13 weeks.

The tissue was treated as described previously for normal placentae (Chamberlain et al. 1968). Lipid material was extracted with an ethanol:acetone:ether mixture (4:4:1) and after removal of fats by precipitation from 70% methanol at −20° the unconjugated steroids were fractionated by solvent partition. In addition to the neutral extract, fractions were prepared equivalent to the oestriol and oestrone—oestradiol fractions of Brown (1955). The oestrogen fractions were acetylated before gas chromatographic analysis
