The 24 hr. 131I uptake in normal neonates has been measured by Fisher, Oddie & Burroughs (1962), Fisher & Oddie (1964), Van Middlesworth (1954) and Ogborn, Waggener & Vanhove (1960), and in the premature infant by Fisher et al. (1962), Martmer, Carrigan, Charbeneau & Sosin (1956), and Gomirato-Sandrucci & Nicola (1958). The results of these studies have been variously interpreted. Van Middles-worth found increased levels (45·5–90%), similar to those in hyperthyroidism in adults, in seven normal infants aged 2–3 days. Martmer et al. considered the uptakes they obtained (15–63%) in premature neonates aged 2–5 days to be within normal limits. Lower values (6·3–36·4%) were obtained by Ogborn et al. (1960) in a similar age group of normal neonates. Gomirato-Sandrucci & Nicola found a higher and more rapid uptake (62·0–93·1%) in premature infants than in normal neonates but no correlation with the degree of prematurity. Fisher et al., in both
Journal of Endocrinology is committed to supporting researchers in demonstrating the impact of their articles published in the journal.
The two types of article metrics we measure are (i) more traditional full-text views and pdf downloads, and (ii) Altmetric data, which shows the wider impact of articles in a range of non-traditional sources, such as social media.
