The incorporation of uridine into RNA in the genital tract after intravenous administration (Miller & Emmens, 1967), has been used to study ovarian steroid effects during early pregnancy in the mouse (Miller, Owen & Emmens, 1968 a) and the rat (Miller, Owen & Emmens, 1968b). This paper reports the application of the same technique to study changes in the uterus and vagina during the oestrous cycle.
Randomly bred female mice of the QS strain weighing 25–30g were kept in pairs and vaginal smears were taken daily over at least two 5-day oestrous cycles before use. The day on which a cornified oestrous smear was obtained was designated day 1, and corresponds to day 1 of pregnancy (Miller et al. 1968a). Results are expressed as in Miller et al. (1968a).
Changes in wet weight in the uterus and vagina during the oestrous cycle are shown in Fig. 1.
Journal of Endocrinology is committed to supporting researchers in demonstrating the impact of their articles published in the journal.
The two types of article metrics we measure are (i) more traditional full-text views and pdf downloads, and (ii) Altmetric data, which shows the wider impact of articles in a range of non-traditional sources, such as social media.
