The adenohypophysis of elasmobranch fishes is remarkable for the degree to which it is subdivided into different regions and therefore for the possibilities it offers for partial hypophysectomy and for the detailed investigation of the functions of the separate regions (Dodd, Evennett & Goddard, 1960). Rostral, ventral and intermediate lobes are easily recognizable, and largely separate from each other, the latter fusing with the neurohypophysis to form a neurointermediate lobe. A prominent saccus vasculosus, of doubtful function but intimately associated with the neuro-intermediate lobe, is also present. The gonadotrophic function of the gland has so far been investigated only by surgical ablation of the various regions and Dodd et al. (1960) and Mellinger (1964), using this technique, have shown that the ventral lobe appears to be the main, if not the only, gonadotrophic region. However, these studies were not supplemented by replacement therapy, and seasonal cytological changes in other regions
