Total amount and concentration of vaginal sialic acid were determined in rats after ovariectomy and treatment with oestradiol, progesterone, norethindrone acetate and quingestanol acetate. Sialic acid concentration increased after ovariectomy and decreased after subsequent treatment with oestradiol. Progesterone had no effect on sialic acid concentration in spayed rats. The synthetic progestins norethindrone acetate and quingestanol acetate, given orally, showed a diphasic effect, increasing vaginal sialic acid concentration at low doses and decreasing it at higher doses. These results are discussed in the light of the oestrogenic properties of progestins derived from 19-nortestosterone.
