Sulpiride, N-(1-ethylpyrrolidin-2-ylmethyl)-2-methoxy-5-sulphamoylbenzamide, was synthesized in 1961 and was demonstrated to have pharmacological effects similar to those of chlorpromazine (Justin-Besacon, Thominet, Laville & Margarit, 1967). Recently we, as well as other investigators, reported that patients under treatment with sulpiride very often had galactorrhoea and in some cases also amenorrhoea (Mancini, Guitelman, Molocznik, Banchik, Laszlo, Fideleff, Artese & Martinez Montes, 1972; Netter, Gorins, Franchimont & Mullet, 1972).
In view of these findings, it was decided to study the effects of treatment with sulphide on serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in a group of patients with increased basal serum concentrations of gonadotrophin such as postmenopausal women.
Ten menopausal women, aged between 42 and 58 years, were studied. The shortest period with amenorrhoea was 8 months and the most prolonged was 10 years. All the patients had the typical
