It has been shown that fluctuations in the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which occur under a variety of physiological and experimental conditions in vivo and are not dependent on the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), are closely paralleled by fluctuations in the rate of conversion of testosterone to 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by intact pituitary tissue in vitro (Denef, Magnus & McEwen, 1973, 1974). This suggests that the rate of formation of DHT by the pituitary gland increases when certain independent regulatory mechanisms controlling the release of FSH are activated. Non-parallel changes in the plasma concentrations of FSH and LH in the rat have also been observed after bilateral cryptorchidectomy (Swerdloff, Walsh, Jacobs & Odell, 1971; Gupta, Rager, Zarzycki & Eichner, 1975; Hall & Gomes, 1975; Gomes & Jain, 1976; Ojeda, Jameson & McCann, 1976). Journal of Endocrinology is committed to supporting researchers in demonstrating the impact of their articles published in the journal.
The two types of article metrics we measure are (i) more traditional full-text views and pdf downloads, and (ii) Altmetric data, which shows the wider impact of articles in a range of non-traditional sources, such as social media.
