The authors and journal apologise for errors in the above paper, which appeared in volume 187 part 1, pages 159–166. The errors relate to: (1) the age of the control rats, which was incorrectly reported on page 160; and (2) the publication of Figure 1A, 2A and 3A which were also published as Figure 3a, 3c and 3e in Alves M, Calegari VC, Cunha DA, Saad MJA, Velloso LA & Rocha EM (2005) Increased expression of advanced glycation end-products and their receptor, and activation of nuclear factor kappa-B in lacrimal glands of diabetic rats, Diabetologia, volume 48 issue 12, pages 2675–2681. The same control animals were used in both studies, the results from which were originally intended to form a single publication. The authors and journal apologise to Diabetologia for this inadvertent duplication of published images.

The original paper states:

Male Wistar rats aged 2 months (young) and 24 months (aging) provided by the university’s (UNICAMP) Animal Breeding Center received standard rodent chow and water ad libitum.’

This should have stated:

Male Wistar rats aged 4.5 months (young) and 24 months (aging) provided by the university’s (UNICAMP) Animal Breeding Center received standard rodent chow and water ad libitum.’
