The authors and journal apologise for an error in the above paper, which appeared in volume 248 part 2, pages R67–R82. The error relates to Fig. 1 where ‘endothelial cells’ should be ‘epithelial cells’. The corresponding legend and the rest of the text are correct. The corrected artwork is given in full below. This correction does not affect the conclusion of the paper.
